The Architect’s Edge: VMware News and VCF Insights – July 2025

Welcome to the July edition of The Architect’s Edge

As summer heats up, so does the VMware landscape. With VMware Cloud Foundation 9 making its official debut last month, there’s a lot to unpack — new design patterns, improved convergence paths, real-world guidance, and updates to nearly every corner of the stack.

In this issue, we’re diving into the VCF 9 real-world architecture updates, covering new guidance on convergence, important vSAN 2-Node and Stretched Cluster updates, and security advisories affecting vSphere 7, 8, and 9 — plus your invitation to our next Architect’s Edge Live webinar on August 5th.

Let’s dig in.

Top Highlights This Month

VCF 9.0: Now Shipping — and Updating

Last month’s initial VCF 9.0 documentation PDF clocked in at 8,117 pages — but in true Broadcom fashion, it’s already been updated to 8,308 pages of dense, practical, technical guidance.

Whether you’re planning greenfield or brownfield, this doc is required reading. Start with these supporting pages to see the architecture evolve:

Deep Dive: Converging to VCF 9

Not everyone is starting fresh. For those wondering how to bridge legacy vSphere environments with VCF 9, this detailed convergence guide is essential reading: Converge your existing vCenter instance and ESXi hosts to VCF.

It outlines which combinations are supported, what you need to clean up before you begin, and what convergence really looks like in practice.

Architect’s Edge Insights — In Case You Missed Them

Over the past month, we’ve published four practical reads in the Architect’s Edge Insights series:

  1. VCF 9.0 Licensing Simplified
  2. What’s Inside the VCF 9 License File
  3. Navigating VxRail and VCF 9
  4. Yes, You Can Run vSphere 7 or 8 with VCF 9

Each one addresses real-world questions we’re hearing from customers, whether you’re already deep into VCF, or just now considering your upgrade path.

Storage Strategy Updates for VCF 9

New workloads and new topologies demand updated docs. These vSAN guides are now refreshed and fully aligned with VCF 9:

Whether you’re designing for metro availability or edge scale, these are must-bookmark resources.

VCF at the Edge: Single-Host Deployment Now Supported

Running VCF in smaller or remote environments? A new capability in VCF 9.0 now enables single-host edge site deployments — perfect for edge, retail, or remote office scenarios where footprint and simplicity matter.

It’s a step toward truly scalable VCF — from the core to the edge. Thanks to Gordon Barr for sharing this!

Security Advisory: vSphere 7, 8, and 9 Affected

A recent Broadcom Security Advisory impacts vSphere 7, 8, and 9, including core components of VCF. Make sure your environments are patched or reviewed — especially as vSphere 9 Update 1 is now available and includes key remediations.

Stay Educated

Nothing beats hands-on experience — and VMware’s Hands-On Labs are fully updated for VCF 9, ready when you are. Whether you’re looking to test-drive lifecycle management, automation workflows, or VCF with Tanzu, these curated labs are free, flexible, and field-proven.

Each lab runs in the cloud — no install, no setup, no commitment. Just learning at your pace, your way.

Behind the Build: Convergence Isn’t Just Technical

Recently, I had a conversation with a customer who said something that really stuck:

“Our infrastructure was ready for VCF. Our teams weren’t.”

They weren’t talking about rackspace, licenses, or compatibility. They meant people.

  • The vSphere team had been operating in isolation for years — managing clusters, upgrades, and lifecycle.
  • The networking team lived in VLANs and physical switches — NSX felt like someone else’s problem.
  • The storage team optimized IOPS and zoning — SPBM felt like a “vSphere thing”… until it wasn’t.
  • And security? They were buried in STIGs, CIS benchmarks, and certificate rotations — expected to harden systems after they were deployed. Expired certs, unpatched OSs, default SSH settings? Their problem — even when they weren’t in the room when decisions were made.

When the org decided to converge onto VCF, they assumed it would be a technical lift. But what they discovered was this: True convergence starts with collaboration.

So they put up a whiteboard in their shared space titled: “Who owns this?” Every time someone said “That’s not my area,” they tallied it. It didn’t take long to see the pattern:

No one owned the problems. Everyone inherited the consequences.

Over the following weeks, the culture shifted:

  • Security joined sprint planning.
  • Networking sat in on SDDC Manager rollouts.
  • Storage aligned on policy and availability, not just capacity.
  • And the vSphere team? They finally had partners, not passengers.

The solution came together — not just because of what VCF enabled, but because the teams chose to converge right alongside it.

That’s the part no installer, no version, no doc can do for you. But when it happens? That’s when the foundation becomes unshakable.

Final Thoughts

VCF 9 isn’t just a version bump — it’s a strategic pivot point. The tools are ready, the docs are live, and the architecture is clearer than ever. Whether you’re navigating convergence, optimizing entitlements, or architecting something entirely new — the foundation is here. And it’s ready.
