The Architect’s Edge: VMware News and VCF Insights – September 2025

From the Desk of Christopher Kusek, Principal Cloud Architect

This month’s edition is packed with updates, milestones, and urgency — and yes, we deliberately held off on publishing until today so we could bring you the fresh news of VCF 9.0.1 and Aria 8.18.5 hot off the press.

And on a personal note — if you missed it, my wife and I welcomed our new daughter into the world. A reminder that the vCommunity has always been about people first.

vSphere 7: You Know 7 is Dead, Right?!

The countdown is over. vSphere 7 reaches End of Support on October 2, 2025. No more patches. No more extensions. Running 7.x past this date means running unsupported infrastructure. (Without an Extended Support Agreement recently acquired)

If you still have 7 in production, this is your final call to act. Migrate, upgrade, or get coverage now.

And remember — this isn’t just about leaving 7 behind. It’s about moving forward. Broadcom provides a VCF Welcome Guide (available through your account team) to help you plan your path into VCF 9:

  • Map entitlements and subscriptions
  • Access the latest training and eBook
  • Learn where to start with Hands-On Labs and resources

Don’t just survive EOS. Use this moment to thrive with a supported, modernized foundation.

Release Spotlight: VCF 9.0.1 & Aria 8.18.5

VCF 9.0.1 is now live — delivering incremental updates across SDDC Manager, vCenter, vSAN, NSX, Automation, and Operations.

Alongside this, the Aria 8.18.5 wave shipped today, continuing to strengthen lifecycle, observability, and automation:

And yes — the VCF 9.0 Guide PDF has now reached 8,491 pages!

Edge Insights: Versioning + Cadence + Live Patching

For years, VMware version numbers felt like a secret code. With Unified VCF Versioning, they now tell a clear story — and for the first time, VMware has published a release cadence so you can plan with confidence.

Release Cadence

  • Major Version (e.g. 9.0.0.0, 10.0.0.0) ? every ~3 years
  • Minor Version (e.g. 9.1.0.0, 9.2.0.0) ? every ~9 months
  • Maintenance Release (e.g. 9.0.1.0, 9.0.2.0) ? every ~3 months (early support phase)
  • Express Patch (e.g. 9.2.1.0100) ? released per component as needed
  • Hot Patch (e.g. 9.2.1.0104) ? released as needed for urgent fixes

Reference: Unified VCF Product Releases & Versioning (KB 410435). In vSphere 9 with VCF 9: live patching extends across vmkernel, NSX, user-space daemons, and vmx runtime. Fewer reboots, less downtime, more predictability.

(Because you’ll ask, 9.0.0.100 was a Live Patch, but VCF 9.0.1 DOES Require reboot!)

VxRail + VCF 9 Adoption Update

VCF 9.0 on VxRail 9.0.010 continues the Dell + VMware joint-engineering story with:

  • Support for latest Intel & AMD 16G platforms
  • Day 1 management cluster up to 6 nodes, vSAN ESA supported
  • Node Commission wizard for Day 2 expansion
  • Non-principal VxRail Managers auto-deployed for workload clusters
  • Subscription-based licensing only

Architectural Spin: Adoption & Repatriation

  • Treat infrastructure as a continuous platform, not a project.
  • Use VPCs for safe self-service networking.
  • Lean into Fleet Manager + Diagnostics for confidence in lifecycle.
  • Private AI in VCF 9 makes AI a first-class citizen.
  • Repatriation & Broadcom Story: VCF is proving to be the destination for customers pulling workloads back from public cloud, aligning private cloud efficiency with Broadcom’s simplified subscription model.
