Architect’s Edge Live: VKS vs. OpenShift & Busting the Bare Metal Myth (Webinar Recap & Resources!)

If you caught my previous article discussing the performance realities of modern containers, you know we’ve been digging deep into the “Virtualization vs. Bare Metal” debate.

To take that conversation to the next level, we just wrapped up our Architect’s Edge Live: VKS vs OpenShift webinar. The engagement was absolutely incredible—our live audience was so hungry for the data that they generated over 220 live resource downloads during the 86-minute session!

If you missed it, you can catch the full recording on YouTube here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rq6KEjAJ78M

I was honored to host an absolute powerhouse panel featuring Bryan Sullins, Chris Catano, and William Arroyo. We covered a lot of ground, but here are a few of the finer points and highlights from our discussion:

💡 The Finer Points: What We Covered

  • Busting the Bare Metal Myth: We tackled the 20-year-old assumption that bare metal is inherently faster than virtualization. Backed by recent Principled Technologies studies, we showed how vSphere Kubernetes Service (VKS) not only competes with bare metal on performance but drastically outpaces it on ease of administration.
  • Pure, CNCF-Conformant Kubernetes: VKS is not about vendor lock-in. We highlighted that VKS delivers upstream, CNCF-conformant Kubernetes on demand. It integrates seamlessly into the ecosystem tools your platform engineers already know and love.
  • Bridging the IT Divide: We discussed how features like the VM Service allow traditional vSphere administrators and modern platform engineers to seamlessly operate in the exact same environment without stepping on each other’s toes.

🔥 Highlighted Q&A

The audience brought some fantastic technical questions to the chat and Q&A. A few standouts:

  • Q: How long do we have to wait for the latest Kubernetes version to be supported on the platform? A: We are exceptionally fast here. VKS is typically only about 2 months behind upstream releases. We are effectively tied for the fastest release cadence in the industry, paired with the lengthiest support cycle for maximum flexibility.
  • Q: I’m using vDefend for MicroSec on VMs. Can VKS integrate into that same system (e.g., using labels for manifests)? A: Absolutely! There are multiple layers of deep integration. You can use traditional DFW, use labels from your K8s clusters to attach VMs into groups, and push rules directly from vDefend into the clusters via Antrea policies.
  • Q: Will upgrading from older versions break my current environment? A: Upgrades are designed to be non-disruptive. The platform allows you to confidently move to the latest versions (like VCF 9) while maintaining stability. (And as a pro-tip: expanded hardware support for VCF 9 was just announced, meaning your existing hardware might already be ready for the upgrade!)
